With its stunning Edwardian architecture, influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and award-winning public park, Mapesbury has become a popular spot for young professionals and families alike.  

The Mapesbury conservation area lies between Cricklewood Broadway (running into Shoot-Up Hill) and Willesden Lane.  In the east it begins at Kilburn tube station and extends to the west beyond Willesden Green tube station, up to Melrose Avenue.  

You won’t see apartment blocks squeezed into tiny garden plots or find ugly roof extensions in the roads protected by Mapesbury’s conservation order (particularly Anson, Dartmouth, Dawlish, Exeter, Keyes, Hovenden, Lydford and Mapesbury roads).  All you’ll find are leafy streets with rows of handsome, two/three storey, semi-detached Victorian and Edwardian villas.

The community is active here: against all odds residents came together to convert a desolate park known as Hoveden Road Play Area into Mapesbury Dell, an award-winning park and children’s play area that holds regular seasonal events throughout the year.  There is also a residents’ association for the Mapesbury estate.

Although Cricklewood Broadway offers a good choice of local shops Mapesbury residents have followed the progress of recent plans to develop a new shopping complex, river park and open green spaces in neighbouring Cricklewood with great interest.  This new development will provide high quality retail and leisure space for the local area.

Houses in the Mapesbury area were built for professional people who needed easy access to the city.  In the main you’ll find solidly built, red brick villas with lovely period details such as leaded lights and wooden porches.  Most are built with two storeys and an attic space.  Rooms are generously proportioned with high ceilings and many properties enjoy substantial rear gardens. Fee paying schools in the wider area include Islamia Girls’ High School, Brondesbury College, Al-Sadiq and Al-Zahra schools, South Hampstead High School for Girls, King Alfred Boys’ School, North Bridge House School, St Margaret’s School, University College School and French Elysee.

Getting out and about in Mapesbury

Willesden Green tube station and Kilburn tube station are on the Jubilee line.  You can also pick up a Thameslink mainline train at Cricklewood Broadway station.  Buses 16 and 32 stop at Cricklewood Broadway.
